Basic Human Needs for Students to Develop motivation:

Autonomy:

Young people desire independence to follow their own passions. Never coerce a child into doing something they don't want to do. It's important to respect a child's autonomy and not make them feel like they are being pushed into something they don't want to do. Children achieve independence when they believe they can decide what tasks to complete and how to complete them. To keep children engaged in learning, it is important to encourage their independence. If you want children to stay engaged in their education, it is important to give them some creative freedom without being too strict.

Competence:

Children strive to believe that they are competent when it comes to finishing tasks by themselves. empowering kids to make effective decisions about both their personal and their education. Providing pupils with the skills necessary to effectively traverse their education and consistently utilize their surroundings to attain their objectives is essential for guaranteeing their success. They protest when assigned assignments they are unable to do by permitting them to succeed. They protest when assigned assignments they are unable to do. Through granting students access to easily accessible materials and helping with their utilization, educators may cultivate a sense of proficiency in their kids. Belonging:

"Students are more likely to be interested in their education if they feel valued or cared for by the educational setting (Gilbert, 2013)." Children desire to feel important, appreciated, and a part of something greater than themselves. Children desire to feel at ease in the environments that the educational system has established for them.

How Cognitive and Sociocultural Factors Affect Student Engagement and Motivation: 

Cognitive Factors: 

The degree of student participation is influenced by the cognitive development of children. When a student engages in class discussions and dedicates time to studying, they are considered to have a genuine interest in their academic pursuits. Students' perspectives, experiences, and instructors' encouragement all have an impact on their motivation and participation.


Sociocultural Factors: 

Students are encouraged to watch, listen to, and discuss their work by teachers and other students. Building relationships between educators and learners encourages participation in all subject areas. "Students' motivation has been shown to be flexible and susceptible to changes in sociocultural factors (Wang et al, 2020)." When students build relationships with their instructors in the classroom, they learn more effectively.

How Teachers can Adress and Overcome these Factors in the Classroom:

"Students' motivation has been demonstrated to be malleable and responsive to changes in sociocultural influences (Wang et al, 2020)." Students are encouraged to watch, listen to, and discuss their work by teachers and other students. Students learn more efficiently when they establish a rapport with their teachers in the classroom.

ATTRIBUTES OF TEACHERS THAT PROMOTE STUDENT MOTIVATION AND ENGAGEMENT

Strong Communication:

Communication is essential to creating a healthy learning environment. Strong relationships between students and their teachers impact their participation, involvement, and success. It is crucial that you familiarize yourself with every student in the class and show that you treat them all fairly and without prejudice. Increased levels of participation and engagement ultimately result in improved performance and learning outcomes. Students tend to engage more in class discussions if they have motivation. In a more casual environment, students can discuss issues and request assistance as required.


Empathy:

Empathic educators are better able to understand their pupils' behavior and develop lesson plans that are specifically tailored to them. Despite their diverse learning methods and cognitive processes, students who feel supported and understood are extremely useful. Additionally, it can support students' involvement in the classroom and aid in problem-solving. Enhanced self-awareness, desire, and activism are among the positive effects.


ATTRIBUTES OF TEACHERS THAT HINDER STUDENT MOTIVATION AND ENGAGEMENT:

Teaching Strategy or Methodology:

If the instructional strategies employed in the classroom are ineffective in stimulating or engaging the students, they may become disinterested in their studies. Their motivation to complete their studies may therefore be impacted. The strategies or manner of instruction a teacher uses will determine whether students continue to be engaged in their studies.


Personality of Teacher and Behavior:

"Students experience a variety of emotions and sensations based on their own life experiences, which may also show up in their classroom (Kunter et at, 2013)." If a student sees you telling others “great job” and not them, their motivation will drop. If their opinions of the instructor or the classroom are unfavorable. This might have an impact on their demeanor and attitude toward the teacher or in that class.


THREE WAYS TEACHERS CAN IMPROVE STUDENT MOTIVATION AND ENGAGEMENT:

Know the Students: 

Make sure the students know you want to see them succeed and are invested in their education. If the students believe this, it will allow them to open and want to be engaged and motivated. 


Splitting the Assignments: 

Dividing an assignment into smaller, more manageable components may make it easier to understand. They will have the capability to divide it into smaller parts and tackle each one individually until completion. Children will not be overwhelmed by all the tasks they are given. As students’ progress, they will gain confidence due to their educational objectives. Students discover that preparing for tasks is simpler since they have learned how to break down questions. They may be inspired to continue after they acknowledge what they have done. 

Build Social Interactions:

"Student motivation to learn can be increased by peer collaboration This strategy also promotes constructive peer interactions (Shah and Gardner, 2008)." The kids actively participate in their study group and are engaged in their work. Students should feel comfortable in a friendly setting where educators are cooperative and empathetic. Through these relationships, students pick up qualities like honesty, respect and confidence that they will use to their relationships with family and the public. They should find a way to search for ways to strengthen the cohesiveness of the group.
